Urgent Survey Exposes School Zone Dangers for West Australian Kids

Huge number of drivers caught speeding through a school zone in Peppermint Grove

UPDATE: A new survey reveals alarming dangers for children in school zones across West Australia as kids return to classes. The RAC (Royal Automobile Club of Western Australia) school traffic survey highlights critical issues such as heavy congestion, illegal parking, and mobile phone distractions that drivers face during daily drop-off and pick-up times.

Conducted among 726 respondents, the survey indicates that nearly 50% of drivers encounter severe congestion at school zones every day. Additionally, nearly half of those surveyed report witnessing illegal parking on a daily basis. A striking 37% of respondents noted impatience among drivers, while 36% observed pedestrians distracted by their mobile phones.

In a concerning trend, one in three drivers—approximately 33%—reported seeing speeding vehicles in school zones daily. Will Golsby, RAC’s external relations general manager, emphasized the urgent need for vigilance during these busy times.

“School traffic is busy and often chaotic, so we’re urging parents and caregivers to follow the rules, drive at the speed limit, be courteous to other drivers and watch out for pedestrians,”

Golsby stated.

The survey also revealed several other issues, including drivers neglecting to use indicators and tailgating. With the start and finish times of school creating a perfect storm of traffic chaos, Golsby urges parents to consider alternative transportation methods.

“Given that congestion is a top daily complaint, it’s crucial to think about walking, cycling, or using public transport to avoid school traffic frustrations,” he advised.

The RAC supports the recent initiative from the WA Government to provide free public transport for students. This move is part of a broader effort to enhance active travel infrastructure, making it easier for kids and parents to walk or cycle to school.

As the school year progresses, these findings raise significant concerns about child safety in school zones. Parents and caregivers are urged to stay alert and prioritize safe driving practices to protect children during these critical times.

With the school traffic situation worsening, the community must act swiftly to address these pressing safety issues. Stay tuned for further updates as this story develops.
