La Trobe Unveils Urgent $62M Seven-Storey Student Tower Plan

UPDATE: La Trobe University has just announced plans for a groundbreaking $62 million student accommodation high-rise at 57-63 Williamson Street, set to redefine the city center. The new seven-storey building will provide 220 beds for students and is designed to enhance the university’s presence in the CBD.

The ambitious project will replace the existing Bolton’s business, which is relocating, and aims to cater primarily to student housing. However, developers confirmed that during vacant periods, particularly in the summer semester break, some units will be available for short-stay accommodations. This initiative will benefit families, visiting academics, and even the general public, ensuring the building maintains high occupancy rates throughout the year.

According to the plans, the high-rise will feature a vibrant retail and restaurant space on the ground floor, alongside six floors dedicated to student living. The building will include 196 units, comprising 183 one-bedroom units, eight four-bedroom units, and five accessible one-bedroom units. Furthermore, amenities will include student study areas, laundry facilities, and 55 bicycle parking spaces, promoting a community-focused environment.

There is strong strategic support for a mixed-use development on the site,”

developers stated, emphasizing the importance of integrating retail and accommodation within walking distance to essential services and public transport. The proposed structure will reach approximately 23 meters in height, aligning with recent developments in Bendigo’s city center, including the GovHub and Bendigo Law Courts.

La Trobe University has engaged students in the design process, conducting surveys to ensure the building promotes safety, inclusivity, and a sense of community. The plans have been submitted to the City of Greater Bendigo, which is expected to make a decision soon.

As the university continues to expand its footprint, this development is crucial not only for student life but also for the economic growth of the region. The community is eager to see how this project progresses, with the potential to reshape the landscape of Bendigo’s city center in the coming years.

Stay tuned for more updates as the City of Greater Bendigo reviews these exciting developments!
