UPDATE: Rising star Charlie O’Derry has opened up about his emotional journey on The Voice Australia, revealing how the experience has transformed his relationship with his father. After competing in the intense October 12 episode, O’Derry’s time on the hit talent show ended, but not before he delivered a stunning performance that showcased his growth as an artist.
Competing under Team Kate Miller-Heidke, the 18-year-old from Port Macquarie, NSW, captivated audiences with his rendition of Oasis’ Champagne Supernova. Despite a rough start, his powerful finish secured him a spot in the sudden-death Showdown round. “I thought I was going to be going home in the first round,” he said. “But I ended up getting through, and I burst into tears behind the stage.” Unfortunately, it was his teammates Alyssa Delpopolo and Sienna Langenheim who advanced to the semi-finals, concluding O’Derry’s impressive run on the show.
“I got to dedicate that song to my parents’ wedding anniversary and my girlfriend’s family on stage that night, so it was a nice ending,”
O’Derry’s journey on The Voice has not only showcased his immense talent but also deepened his bond with his father, who suffered a severe brain injury in a workplace accident. Turning from a promising football career to music, O’Derry emphasized how this shared passion brought them closer. “I think it has made it more of a persistent thing that we do now that [music] is kind of my lifestyle,” he stated.
Since his audition, which earned him a coveted four-chair turn, O’Derry has performed at various local events, including the Port Macquarie Cup on October 10. He expressed gratitude for the overwhelming support from his community. “It’s been really nice to see how excited everyone has been to see my journey on the show,” he remarked.
With his HSC exams starting on October 16, O’Derry is balancing his academic responsibilities with his aspirations in music. “I have six exams and then I am finished,” he shared. “I’ve been working heaps, doing music and enjoying life outside of school now that I’ve graduated.” Music remains his top priority, as he prepares for the Hideaway Festival, an all-ages event in Port Macquarie on November 8.
O’Derry is excited about this festival, which will highlight local talent from the Mid North Coast. “I am also working on new music, which is really exciting,” he added, hinting at a bright future ahead.
As Charlie O’Derry continues to navigate his journey in music, fans eagerly await what comes next for this talented artist, who has already proven to be a force to be reckoned with on The Voice Australia.
