UPDATE: Mount Buffalo National Park is partially reopening to the public today, October 14, 2023, as authorities continue the urgent search for suspected double killer Dezi Freeman. Freeman has been at large since the tragic shooting that claimed the lives of officers Neal Thompson and Vadim De Waart-Hottart on August 26.
A significant manhunt, involving multiple police forces and specialist agencies, has been ongoing since the incident. A police spokeswoman confirmed that while parts of the park will be accessible, certain areas remain off-limits as the search persists.
“We have deployed tactical members, the Public Order Response Team, and other specialist resources to search vast sections of Mount Buffalo National Park,” the spokeswoman stated. “Extensive air support has also been provided by the Victoria Police Air Wing.”
Authorities have interviewed more than 800 individuals, including numerous associates of Freeman, as they sift through over 1,600 pieces of intelligence gathered since the shooting. Despite these extensive efforts, police have yet to locate Freeman, heightening concerns in the local community.
The police have urged anyone with hunting or trail cameras in the area to check their devices and report any relevant findings. A $1 million reward remains in place for information leading to Freeman’s arrest, emphasizing the critical nature of community assistance in this case.
“We are grateful to Parks Victoria for their cooperation during this challenging time, which has included staff checking facilities in the park prior to reopening,” the spokeswoman added. “We also thank the public for their overwhelming support since the tragic events of August 26.”
As the search continues, authorities emphasize that public safety remains a top priority. Anyone with information is urged to contact police immediately at 1800 333 000.
