URGENT UPDATE: The beloved Albion Hotel on Dean Street will close its doors for good on Sunday, October 19, marking the end of an era for local patrons. This decision comes amid increasingly tough trading conditions that have plagued many businesses in the area.
Staff were informed of the closure earlier this week, leaving the community in shock. The Albion, a four-storey establishment known for its vibrant atmosphere and rooftop bar opened in 2012, has been a staple for years. The lease will not be renewed, although there are hopes that another operator may take over the venue.
Former manager Brendon Cooper, who ran the pub from 2004 to 2019, expressed his disappointment.
“Any pub closing in town is never good, it’s always disappointing,”
he stated. He highlighted the importance of variety in the hospitality industry, adding that the closure is a loss not just for owners and staff, but also for loyal customers.
According to Cooper, the current cost of living crisis is forcing many consumers to tighten their budgets. “I think everyone is being a bit more careful with their money,” he noted. “There’s only so much money that can go around, and a lot of it gets tied up with other things before it gets used for entertainment expenses.”
Recent closures in the area, such as Space Nightspot, which may relaunch after renovations, and Zed Bar, which was rebranded to The Globe Hotel, signal a troubling trend. The Australian Venue Co, which operates the Albion and boasts over 200 pubs across Australia, including local favorites like Beer DeLuxe and The Bended Elbow, has been contacted for further comment.
The situation is dire for retailers as well, with numerous shops sitting empty on Albury’s main street. Amanda Ward-Morcom, chair of the Albury CBD Committee and owner of Priceline Albury, recently stated,
“Rent is a killer, retail is really tough, and the council is making it hard for people.”
She emphasized that the current climate makes the city appear to have significant issues.
As of now, there are 19 retail sites on Dean Street listed for lease through two commercial real estate agents, highlighting the urgent need for solutions to support local businesses.
The closure of the Albion Hotel is a stark reminder of the challenges facing the hospitality sector and the broader retail environment. The community and local officials are left wondering how to revive their treasured establishments and keep the spirit of Albury alive.
What happens next remains to be seen, but the impact of these closures will be felt long after the last pint is poured this Sunday.
