Urgent Inquiry Reveals Whittlesea Mayor’s Troubling Conduct

UPDATE: A new inquiry confirms shocking misconduct by suspended former Whittlesea mayor Aidan McLindon, revealing serious allegations of discrimination and bizarre accusations against the council. The 80-page report was presented in state parliament on October 24, 2023, detailing McLindon’s “extremely poor conduct” during his brief tenure.

The Commission of Inquiry into Whittlesea Council found that McLindon, who has faced suspension since April 2023, showed blatant disregard for his role, making disparaging remarks about minority groups that left staff feeling unsafe. This report highlights McLindon’s failure to represent the council effectively and raises alarms about the council’s leadership under CEO Craig Lloyd, who was criticized for mishandling the situation.

The inquiry states, “He made wildly provocative public statements that reflected on sections of the community in disparaging ways,” and condemned his “unsubstantiated and sometimes bizarre accusations” against the council and government. This troubling behavior has been deemed detrimental to the council’s mission to serve its community.

Despite these serious findings, McLindon is set to return to council duties on Friday, October 27, 2023. The commission did not recommend further suspension, citing insufficient evidence of health or safety risks. However, McLindon has submitted a defiant response, rejecting claims of poor behavior and expressing disappointment over not being afforded “procedural fairness.”

This revelation unfolds in the backdrop of ongoing turmoil for the Whittlesea Council, which previously faced a crisis leading to the sacking of the entire council in 2020 due to factionalism and misconduct. The municipality operated without elected representatives until 2024, and a municipal monitor has now been appointed for the third time since 2019.

As the community reacts to this urgent development, residents and officials alike are left grappling with the implications of McLindon’s return. Will the council’s reputation be restored, or will further controversy arise? Stay tuned for updates on this developing story.
