Adventurer Overcomes Challenges on Grueling 42 km Hike

UPDATE: Adventurer Mandy Nolan shares her transformative experience on the Gidjuum Gulganyi Walk, a challenging 42-kilometre hike connecting Mount Jerusalem and Nightcap National Parks. Just days after returning from Europe, Nolan embarked on this demanding trek, revealing the emotional and physical trials she faced on her journey.

Walking through the stunning Wanganui Gorge early this morning, Nolan was struck by the beauty of nature, shedding tears amid the misty treetops. “I felt very emotionally overwhelmed by this powerful, deep sense of connection,” she stated, highlighting the importance of preserving our wild spaces.

Nolan, who humorously describes herself as “no Gina Chick,” faced the hike equipped with a heavy 20-kilo backpack filled with more gear than necessary. Her packing choices, including a traditional canvas backpack and metal water bottles, became a source of amusement for her fellow hikers. The reality of carrying everything for four days tested her endurance and resolve.

The first day of the hike proved manageable, covering 8 kilometres uphill. However, the second day was a grueling test of stamina, with fellow hikers warning her to “be prepared.” They set off at 5:30 AM, facing a relentless climb that left Nolan feeling the effects of jet lag and a head cold. “Nothing could have prepared me,” she confessed, pushing through the physical strain.

As temperatures soared to 33 degrees Celsius, Nolan battled exhaustion, heat stroke, and moments of doubt. “I felt that little voice inside wanting it to be over,” she admitted. Yet, with the support of her friends, she persevered, ultimately covering the arduous 16-kilometre stretch in an exhausting 11 hours.

The experience culminated in a profound sense of accomplishment as Nolan completed the hike alongside her friends, representing solidarity across generations. Reflecting on her journey, she emphasized the spiritual connection to the land and the importance of stepping out of one’s comfort zone.

“Walking through the Country is hard, but do it,” Nolan encouraged. “Just pick a cooler month and cut back on the undies.” Her story resonates deeply, inspiring others to connect with nature while emphasizing the fragility of our environment.

As Nolan’s journey highlights the urgency of appreciating and protecting natural spaces, it serves as a reminder of the profound impact that such experiences can have on our well-being.
