Japan Stuns Brazil with Historic Comeback Win in Friendly

Japan achieved a historic victory over Brazil, defeating the South American giants 3-2 in a thrilling friendly match at Ajinomoto Stadium on October 17, 2023. This marked Japan’s first win against Brazil in 14 attempts, showcasing their resilience as they fought back from a two-goal deficit to secure the remarkable triumph.

In the first half, Brazil appeared to be in control, with goals from Paulo Henrique and Gabriel Martinelli giving them a 2-0 lead. The five-time world champions extended their strong form from a recent 5-0 victory against South Korea just four days prior, leaving fans optimistic for a 12th win over Japan.

However, the tide turned after halftime. Just seven minutes into the second half, Takumi Minamino seized on a defensive error by Cruzeiro’s Fabricio Bruno to pull one back for Japan. This goal shifted the momentum, and shortly thereafter, Keito Nakamura’s shot deflected off Bruno, leveling the match at 2-2.

The decisive moment came in the 71st minute when Ayase Ueda scored the winning goal with a well-placed header, igniting celebrations among the sell-out crowd.

Brazil’s coach, Carlo Ancelotti, expressed disappointment following the match, emphasizing the need for his players to develop greater mental resilience. “No, everything is not fine,” Ancelotti stated at the post-match press conference. “When the team loses, we are upset, which is normal. Everyone is upset. I don’t like to lose, and neither do the players. We have to learn from this defeat, as we always do in football.”

Ancelotti acknowledged that the team’s performance was solid until the mistake leading to Japan’s first goal. “Until Bruno’s mistake on the first goal, the game was well controlled. After that, the team fell apart mentally,” he added.

Both Japan and Brazil have already secured qualification for the 2026 World Cup, which will be co-hosted by the United States, Canada, and Mexico. This match not only serves as a significant milestone for Japan but also raises questions about Brazil’s preparations as they continue to navigate challenges under Ancelotti’s leadership.

With this victory, Japan has not only changed the narrative of their historical encounters with Brazil but also ignited hopes for their future in international football.
