AFL Clubs Make Strategic Moves During Hectic Trade Period

The 2025 trade period could shape the future of the AFL and several clubs for the next decade.

The Australian Football League (AFL) has concluded a bustling trade period, resulting in significant changes for all clubs involved. Teams have strategically maneuvered to acquire new talent while parting ways with established players as they prepare for the upcoming season.

For the **Adelaide Crows**, the draft hand now includes picks at **16, 48, 55, 64, 73, 75, 93,** and **111**. They welcomed **Finnbar Maley** from the trade, exchanging **pick 57** and a **2026 future fourth-round pick** in the process.

The **Brisbane Lions** have bolstered their lineup by acquiring **Sam Draper** and **Oscar Allen**, alongside picks **17, 23, 44, 51,** and **59**. They traded away **Brandon Starcevich** and picks **19, 46,** and **52** to facilitate these acquisitions.

The **Carlton Blues** made significant moves, adding players such as **Liam Reidy**, **Ben Ainsworth**, **Ollie Florent**, and **Campbell Chesser** to their roster. They now hold draft picks **9, 31, 42,** and **43**, but have parted ways with notable players including **Tom De Koning**, **Jack Silvagni**, and **Charlie Curnow**, as well as several draft picks.

The **Collingwood Magpies** enhanced their draft hand with **Jack Buller** and picks **45, 56,** and **61**. In exchange, they released **Brody Mihocek** and a **2026 future third-round pick**.

The **Essendon Bombers** have secured pick **21** and **Brayden Fiorini** while moving on from **Sam Draper** and a **2026 third-round pick**.

**Fremantle Dockers** adjusted their strategy by acquiring **Judd McVee** and picks **20, 47,** and **103**. They traded away **Liam Reidy** and **Will Brodie**, along with a selection of other picks.

The **Gold Coast Suns** made an impressive move by acquiring star players **Christian Petracca** and **Jamarra Ugle-Hagan**. They now hold draft picks **19, 24, 28,** and **29**, while parting ways with multiple players and significant draft capital, including **two first-round picks** in **2026**.

The **Geelong Cats** added **James Worpel** and pick **99** without sacrificing any players, showcasing a focused approach to enhancing their team.

The **GWS Giants** strengthened their draft hand with **Clayton Oliver** and picks **14** and **37**. They released **Jacob Wehr** and several other picks to finalize their trades.

**Hawthorn** focused on securing picks **10, 22,** and **39**, alongside a future third and fourth-round picks tied to other clubs. They parted with **James Worpel**, **Jai Serong**, and others in their reshuffle.

**Melbourne Demons** made bold moves by acquiring **Max Heath**, **Brody Mihocek**, and **Changkuoth Jiath** while releasing key players including **Charlie Spargo** and **Clayton Oliver**.

For **North Melbourne**, the recent trades brought in **Charlie Spargo** and pick **57**, while losing **Finnbar Maley** and another draft pick.

**Port Adelaide** secured **Jacob Wehr**, **Corey Durdin**, and **Will Brodie**, trading away picks **29** and **67**.

The **Richmond Tigers** made a strategic acquisition of pick **38** and **Patrick Retschko**, while letting go of **Tylar Young** and another pick.

**St Kilda** enhanced their roster with **Jack Silvagni**, **Tom De Koning**, and **Liam Ryan**, while releasing **Max Heath** and **Jack Steele** along with a future second-round pick.

The **Sydney Swans** welcomed **Charlie Curnow** and **Malcom Rosas Jnr**, trading away several players and draft picks, including **Ollie Florent**.

Lastly, the **West Coast Eagles** made headlines by acquiring **Brandon Starcevich**, **Tylar Young**, and several draft picks, while parting with key players including **Oscar Allen**.

As the dust settles from this year’s trade period, clubs are now turning their attention to preparing for the upcoming season, armed with fresh talent and renewed strategies. Each team’s decisions will undoubtedly shape the competitive landscape of the AFL as they strive for success in **2024**.
