Marco Bezzecchi Shatters Phillip Island Lap Record in MotoGP Practice

Italian rider Marco Bezzecchi set a new benchmark at the Phillip Island Circuit during the Australian MotoGP practice session on October 6, 2023. In an impressive display, Bezzecchi clocked a time of 1:26.492, breaking the previous lap record held by injured teammate Jorge Martin, who recorded 1:27.246 earlier this season.

The 26-year-old’s performance came under ideal weather conditions, allowing four other riders to also finish under the 1:27 mark. Bezzecchi initially posted a time of 1:26.580 before pushing the limits further in the final moments of the 60-minute session. This feat is particularly remarkable considering Bezzecchi’s recent history; he is recovering from a serious crash that occurred during the Indonesian Grand Prix on October 5, which also involved world champion Marc Marquez.

Bezzecchi Faces Penalties in Upcoming Race

Despite his record-setting lap, Bezzecchi’s aspirations for the Australian MotoGP are complicated by a double long-lap penalty he must serve in the race. This penalty stems from his involvement in the incident that sidelined Marquez. As he prepares for the event, his chances of victory appear challenging.

Bezzecchi was not the only rider making use of the favorable conditions at Phillip Island. Australian rider Jack Miller showcased his speed during the morning session, finishing with the fastest time. However, he struggled in the afternoon, ultimately placing 13th. Miller’s season has been tough, currently sitting 18th in the championship standings.

In the absence of Jorge Martin, who has been recovering from a displaced shoulder fracture sustained during the incident in Japan, Lorenzo Savadori stepped in as a substitute. Savadori finished 19th out of 22 riders in Friday’s main practice, indicating a challenging weekend ahead.

Qualifying for the Australian MotoGP is set for Saturday, with the sprint race scheduled for later in the day. The main Grand Prix will take place on Sunday, October 8, at 14:00 local time. As the excitement builds at Phillip Island, all eyes will be on Bezzecchi and his quest to translate practice success into a podium finish.
