Collingwood’s Mason Cox Leaves Club After Not Receiving New Contract

Mason Cox, a beloved figure at the Collingwood Football Club, has announced he will not be offered a new contract for the upcoming season. In a heartfelt video shared on his Instagram account, Cox expressed gratitude to the club and its supporters, stating he is “pretty excited about what’s next” in his career. While he did not disclose whether he intends to retire or seek opportunities with another club, his future remains a topic of interest.

Reflecting on his journey, Cox remarked, “It’s crazy to think that you’d never heard of a sport … to then be a premiership player.” His connection with Collingwood fans has been a defining aspect of his career, as he declared, “Collingwood supporters are the best supporters in the world.”

Career Highlights at Collingwood

Cox made his debut on Anzac Day in 2016, marking the occasion by kicking the first goal of the game in front of a crowd of 85,082 at the MCG. Initially a college basketball player, he joined Collingwood as an international rookie in 2014 after impressing at two combines, one held in Los Angeles and another in Australia.

His early years saw him participating in 20 games over his first two seasons, but it was in 2018 that he established himself as a regular player. That year, he delivered one of the most remarkable performances in a preliminary final, helping Collingwood overcome the heavily favored Richmond team and secure a place in the premiership decider. Although the Magpies lost to West Coast in a nail-biting match the following week, Cox’s stellar performance that season solidified his status within the team.

Cox’s perseverance paid off when he finally became a premiership player five years later, as Collingwood triumphed over the Brisbane Lions in an epic 2023 grand final. This victory not only fulfilled his dream but also showcased his evolution from a newcomer to a key player on the team.

Personal Milestones and Legacy

In addition to his accomplishments on the field, Cox became an Australian citizen in 2022 during a ceremony at the MCG, further solidifying his commitment to his adopted country. Throughout his career, he faced challenges, including a significant eye injury that led him to wear protective goggles during his final seasons.

As he concludes his time with Collingwood, Cox leaves behind a legacy marked by determination and resilience. He finishes his tenure with an impressive record of 127 goals, a testament to his contributions to the team and the sport.

Cox’s departure from Collingwood marks the end of an era for both the player and the club. As fans await news of his next steps, one thing remains clear: Mason Cox will always be remembered as a cult hero among Collingwood supporters and a prominent figure in Australian football.
