Identical Twins’ Bond Shines Amid Disability Challenges in WA

URGENT UPDATE: The inspirational story of identical twins Ethan and Edward Chen is captivating hearts as their mother, Genevieve Chua, shares their journey during Telethon 2025. Despite facing immense challenges, the bond between the twins shines brightly, proving that love can overcome adversity.

Seven-year-old Ethan, who was born healthy alongside his brother Edward, who has level four spastic quadriplegic cerebral palsy, recently expressed a touching sentiment that underscores their unbreakable connection. “Mum, before you die, you need to teach me everything you know about Edward so I can continue to look after him after you go,” he said. This heartfelt statement reveals Ethan’s instinctive desire to protect his twin, a role that was never expected of him.

The twins’ journey began under challenging circumstances. At just 25 weeks, a scan at King Edward Memorial Hospital revealed life-threatening complications due to twin-to-twin transfusion syndrome. Emergency surgeries were performed to save their lives, and they were born eight weeks later, but the reality of Edward’s condition soon set in.

Genevieve recalls, “From that point, I think our life has been not knowing.” As first-time parents, they faced a barrage of medical appointments, leading to the devastating diagnosis of Edward’s severe brain damage. Genevieve, a former veterinarian, quickly became her son’s advocate, tirelessly seeking the best care for both boys.

Today, Ethan dreams of playing in the NBA, while Edward enjoys long walks and social interactions in their local Willetton community. Their mother describes Ethan as a nurturing brother who instinctively knows how to comfort Edward, often offering cuddles and support during difficult days.

Despite the emotional weight on Ethan, Genevieve strives to maintain a balance, saying, “Ethan has a very heavy burden to carry, and I try my very best not to put pressure on him.” She highlights the importance of family support, emphasizing the role of their close-knit community and organizations like Hannah’s House and the Healthy Strides Foundation in providing crucial assistance.

The Healthy Strides program has notably transformed Edward’s experience with therapy, as Genevieve explains, “We’ve been going ever since. It changed the way we view therapy.” The family’s gratitude for the support they receive is palpable, especially as they navigate the complexities of Edward’s care.

Genevieve openly shares her fears about the future, admitting, “I’m so scared. I feel this is so out of my depth, but then, if not me, then who?” Her vulnerability resonates deeply, showcasing the emotional rollercoaster that comes with caring for a child with severe disabilities.

As the Telethon 2025 event unfolds, the Chen family’s story highlights the resilience of love and the extraordinary bond between siblings. Genevieve concludes, “Edward brings everyone together. Our family wouldn’t be this strong if Edward wasn’t around.”

This powerful narrative not only sheds light on the challenges faced by families with children who have disabilities but also inspires hope and community support. The Chen family’s journey is a testament to the strength found in love, making it a story worth sharing across platforms.

Stay tuned for more updates on their incredible story and the ongoing efforts of Telethon to support families in need.
