Thousands Without Power as Devastating Storm Hits NSW, QLD

UPDATE: A powerful “supercell” storm has left thousands without power across New South Wales and southeast Queensland following severe weather conditions on Saturday afternoon. The intense storm, which unleashed damaging hailstones the size of golf balls in Ipswich, Caboolture, and Samford, resulted in approximately 4,800 homes losing electricity at the peak of the storm around 9:45 PM on Saturday.

Sky News meteorologist Rob Sharpe reported that the storm originated at the NSW-Queensland border before moving north. As of 8:30 AM on Sunday, reports indicate that 73 homes remain without power, highlighting the ongoing impact of the severe weather. Residents described the chaos as strong winds and damaging hail battered the region, causing significant property damage and disruptions.

This storm is just the beginning, as meteorologists warn of an impending heatwave that could hit large parts of NSW early this week. Sharpe forecasts that temperatures may soar to 40°C in the northwest and central west areas, potentially breaking records. “On Tuesday, we could see some records fall over parts of the northwest and central west of the state,” he stated, emphasizing the rarity of such extreme heat conditions for this time of year.

The effects of the storm and subsequent heatwave are felt beyond NSW, as sweltering conditions are expected to spread across the country. South Australia is bracing for a scorching high of 45°C in the coming days, with Sharpe noting, “That heat has transferred out into the western inland parts of the country with widespread temperatures above 40.”

With more wild weather on the horizon, residents across NSW and Queensland are urged to remain vigilant. The combination of intense storms followed by extreme heat presents a unique challenge for emergency services and residents alike. As the situation develops, updates will continue to be provided to keep communities informed and safe.

Stay tuned for more urgent updates as officials monitor the aftermath of the storm and prepare for the upcoming heatwave.
