UPDATE: In an electrifying season opener, Perth Lynx veteran Alex Ciabattoni delivered a standout performance, leading her team to a dramatic 75-72 victory over the Adelaide Lightning. The game unfolded on October 14, 2023, and Ciabattoni’s pivotal role came when her team was critically short-staffed, missing key players including reigning MVP Ally Wilson.

The Lynx faced an uphill battle after relinquishing a significant 17-point lead during the third quarter. With just 83 seconds left on the clock, the Lightning surged ahead, but Ciabattoni refused to let her team falter. She snagged a crucial offensive rebound amidst fierce competition, scoring her 23rd point of the night and securing a three-point lead that proved decisive.

Coach Ryan Petrik praised Ciabattoni’s exceptional performance, labeling it “the most important game she’s played.” He noted the immense pressure placed on her shoulders in the absence of Wilson, emphasizing her versatility as a “funky point-guard” who effectively operates as a combo guard. “She understands what I want and how I want to play,” Petrik stated, highlighting their longstanding partnership.

Yemiyah Morris made a significant impact early in the game, demonstrating defensive prowess with four blocks in the first quarter as Perth applied relentless pressure. However, the Lightning proved formidable as Brianna Turner and Anneli Maley combined for 15 rebounds each, ultimately winning the rebound battle.

Petrik acknowledged the challenge posed by Adelaide, admitting, “We’re missing 60 minutes of starting five-level court time.” He expressed concern about maintaining the pace as the game progressed, but credited his players for holding strong when it mattered most.

This thrilling opener not only showcased Ciabattoni’s skill but also set the tone for a competitive WNBL season ahead. Fans can expect to see more of her leadership as the Lynx navigate the challenges of missing key players.

As the season unfolds, all eyes will be on how the Lynx adapt and respond to these early challenges, with Ciabattoni at the forefront of their efforts. Stay tuned for more updates on the WNBL as this exciting season continues to develop.
