Urgent Update: Zero Affordable Rentals for Essential Workers in Sutherland Shire

UPDATE: A shocking new report reveals that there are currently no affordable rental homes available for essential workers in Sutherland Shire, as confirmed by a state-wide survey conducted on March 15-16, 2023. This alarming finding underscores a growing crisis for those serving in critical roles across health, education, and emergency services.

The survey, conducted by Anglicare, examined 17,028 rental listings across New South Wales (NSW) and found that only 1% of properties in Greater Sydney were designated as affordable for essential workers. Disturbingly, both Sutherland Shire and the Northern Beaches reported zero listings.

Simon Miller, Chief Executive of Anglicare Sydney, stated, “Nurses, aged care workers, teachers, hospitality, and social services staff are the backbone of our communities, yet they are unable to afford to live in the communities in which they work.” This dire situation forces essential workers into lengthy commutes, exacerbating transportation costs and personal time constraints.

Authorities in Sutherland Shire have proposed an Affordable Housing Contributions Scheme, which would require developers in areas rezoned for higher density to pay a levy to support affordable housing initiatives. However, this scheme has yet to be implemented, leaving essential workers in a state of uncertainty.

Miller emphasized the urgent need for “practical solutions through policy and development” to address the housing crisis both now and in the future. As the demand for housing continues to rise, the lack of affordable options for those who keep communities functioning raises serious concerns about the sustainability of local economies.

This situation is not just a statistic; it represents real families struggling to find housing within the communities they serve. With essential workers often facing financial strain, the call for immediate action has never been more critical.

As the housing crisis unfolds, all eyes will be on the Sutherland Shire Council to see if they can deliver on their promises and provide a lifeline for those who dedicate their lives to serving the public. Stay tuned for further updates on this developing story.
