BREAKING: A new koala named Poppy has just arrived at Yanchep National Park, accompanied by the announcement of the first joey born there in 15 years, now named Djilba. This exciting news was revealed this morning by Butler MLA Lorna Clarke and Environment Minister Matthew Swinbourn.
The five-year-old koala Poppy comes from Ballarat Wildlife Park and marks a significant addition to the park’s existing wildlife. After nearly seven months in her mother Miffy’s pouch, the joey Djilba, whose name symbolizes conception and new life in the Noongar season, has been officially named.
Authorities confirmed that Miffy, also from Ballarat, successfully mated with Louie Jett, one of two young male koalas introduced from South Australia. Following their arrival in late 2024, the koalas have thrived in Yanchep, contributing to the park’s growing colony.
In a statement, the Department of Biodiversity, Conservation and Attractions reported that Perth Zoo vets monitored Poppy during her quarantine and are keeping a close eye on mother and joey. “Both mother and joey are doing very well under the care of ranger staff,” the department stated.
Since koalas were first introduced to Yanchep National Park in 1938, the population has seen fluctuations, but with the latest arrivals, the total now stands at six, including the 15-year-old Koodah, the last koala born at the park before Djilba.
Minister Swinbourn expressed enthusiasm for the new arrivals, stating, “It is wonderful news for staff, visitors, and wildlife enthusiasts across Western Australia. With these additions, we expect more people will travel to Yanchep to see Miffy, Djilba, and Poppy.” Last year, the park recorded a staggering 460,000 visitors.
MLA Lorna Clarke emphasized the importance of Yanchep as a family destination, saying, “Families have been visiting Yanchep National Park for generations to see the koalas and enjoy the bush. It’s wonderful to welcome Poppy to the park.”
With these milestones, the dedication of the rangers who care for these animals is evident. The public is encouraged to visit Yanchep National Park now more than ever, as Poppy and Djilba join the thriving koala community, showcasing the beauty of local wildlife.
This is a developing story, and updates will follow as more information becomes available.
