Whittlesea Council Unveils Urgent Road Management Plan Update

UPDATE: The Whittlesea Council has just announced a critical update to its Road Management Plan during a meeting on October 14, 2023. This ambitious plan governs the management and maintenance of over 1,497 kilometers of council-owned roads, alongside 2,809 kilometers of pathways, 124 bridges, and 2,403 kilometers of kerb and channels.

This urgent revision comes in the wake of alarming findings from the RACV’s My Melbourne Road campaign, which identified some of Melbourne’s most dangerous roads located in Epping and Thomastown. The updated plan aims to enhance safety and reliability for the community, addressing issues such as potholes, overgrown vegetation, dumped rubbish, and cracked pavements.

Mayor Martin Taylor emphasized the significance of the plan, stating, “Our road network is an important part of our community. The Road Management Plan helps us take care of our roads, paths, and related infrastructure in a clear and responsible way.” He added that this initiative demonstrates the council’s commitment to maintaining safe and reliable transportation networks for all residents.

The council routinely revises its Road Management Plan every four years, but the latest updates were deemed necessary to respond to the pressing safety concerns raised by local residents and advocacy groups. The plan will establish clear standards for how the council addresses maintenance issues, ensuring that residents can rely on well-maintained roads and pathways.

As this plan rolls out, community members can expect enhanced safety measures and quicker responses to maintenance requests. The council is dedicated to ensuring that the infrastructure remains safe for everyone who uses it.

This announcement marks a pivotal moment for road safety in the Whittlesea area, as residents can now look forward to improved maintenance standards and a more reliable road network. Stay tuned for more updates as the council implements these necessary changes.
