Marion Dreyer Recognized as Coast Community Champion for Dedication

In a recent ceremony, Marion Dreyer was honored as the Coast Community Champion for her extensive contributions to the local community. Known for her caring and compassionate nature, Dreyer has dedicated numerous hours to supporting others, particularly through her role as club captain of the Ettalong Pelicans Masters Swimming Club, where she has served for over seven years.

Dreyer’s journey in swimming began relatively late in life, as she only learned to swim in her late 40s. Since then, she has made significant strides, both in her personal fitness and in fostering a sense of community among swimmers. Her accolades include winning a bronze medal in the Open Water Swim at the 2014 Rockhampton Masters Championships in the 65-69 age group. This achievement reflects her commitment to not only improving her own skills but also encouraging others to participate in swimming for fitness and enjoyment.

Leadership and Community Engagement

Under Dreyer’s leadership, the Ettalong Pelicans have thrived. She has actively promoted the club, organized competitions, and motivated swimmers of all ages to engage in both fitness and social aspects of swimming. In 2022, after a two-year hiatus due to COVID-19, Dreyer led a team of 23 swimmers aged 25 to 76 at the Masters Swimming Championships held at the Sydney Olympic Aquatic Centre. The team finished seventh out of 84 competing teams, marking one of their most successful outcomes in years.

Dreyer’s commitment to inclusivity is notable. She prioritizes creating social opportunities for club members, ensuring that everyone feels welcome and valued. Her unwavering enthusiasm and quiet energy have made a meaningful difference in the lives of many.

Our Central Coast Community Champion initiative honors people who, through exceptional effort and commitment, make a difference to the lives of others,” stated Central Coast Mayor Lawrie McKinna. He emphasized Dreyer’s inspiring motto: “never say never and give it a go,” which encapsulates her approach to both swimming and community engagement.

A Lasting Legacy

Dreyer’s dedication to the Ettalong Pelicans has been recognized with a recent life membership award, further solidifying her legacy within the club. Her efforts not only enhance the swimming experience for participants but also foster a strong sense of camaraderie among members.

As a Community Champion, Dreyer exemplifies the spirit of resilience and service that enriches the Central Coast community. Her story serves as an inspiration to many, showcasing how a passion for sport can lead to lasting positive impacts in the community.
