Kmart Set to Open in Charlestown Square by December 2023

Charlestown Square is poised to welcome a new Kmart store, much to the excitement of local shoppers. The opening is targeted for mid-November 2023, following confirmation from signage at the existing Target store, which will be transitioning to Kmart. The announcement arrives just ahead of the holiday season, promising residents a new shopping option in time for Christmas.

The sign outside the Target location stated, “We’re sorry to be leaving the Charlestown community. From 15 November, we hope it’s not ‘goodbye’, but ‘see you soon’.” This transition marks a significant shift for the shopping complex, which is owned by The GPT Group. Although there has been no formal announcement from Kmart or The GPT Group, the information has generated considerable interest and prompted shoppers to visit Target in search of last-minute deals.

The parent company of both Kmart and Target, Wesfarmers, began exploring store conversions in 2020. An investor update indicated plans to accelerate the growth of Kmart while addressing financial challenges at Target. The review identified at least 92 Target locations scheduled for conversion into Kmart stores, with Stockland Green Hills being one of the first.

As news of the Charlestown store conversion spread, shoppers quickly flocked to Target, leading to a significant depletion of clearance items. The potential opening of Kmart is expected to draw even more foot traffic to Charlestown Square.

In addition to the new Kmart, Charlestown Square has recently attracted several notable brands. Yo-Chi, a popular social media sensation, opened its doors earlier this month, while Adidas is set to launch its store in November. The Stable Door has also joined the shopping centre, bringing brands like Wrangler, Ariat, Thomas Cook, and Ringers Western.

The Newcastle Herald has reached out to The GPT Group for further comments regarding the store transition and the anticipated Kmart opening. As the holiday season approaches, shoppers in Charlestown can look forward to a revamped shopping experience with the arrival of Kmart, alongside other popular brands enhancing the retail landscape.
