Melbourne City Stuns Buriram United with Last-Minute Comeback

BREAKING: Melbourne City has pulled off an electrifying comeback to secure a 2-1 victory against Buriram United in the Asian Champions League at AAMI Park earlier today. In a thrilling match that saw City snatch victory in injury time, this win marks their first points in the tournament this season.

The clash turned dramatically when Buriram’s Serbian midfielder Goran Causic scored in the 72nd minute, putting the Thai club ahead and leaving City fans anxious. However, with Socceroos coach Tony Popovic in attendance, City rallied back. Captain Aziz Behich set up substitute Elsaban Rashani, who equalized in the 84th minute, igniting hopes for a turnaround.

In a nail-biting finish, young striker Max Caputo delivered the decisive blow, scoring the winner in the 97th minute. This dramatic finish not only highlights City’s tenacity but also revitalizes their campaign, placing them back in contention for the knockout stages of the tournament.

City now sits at three points, positioned seventh after two losses and today’s crucial win, while Buriram trails in eighth by goal difference. With five matches remaining, City is back in the hunt for a spot in the round of 16, where eight of the twelve teams in the eastern division will advance.

The match featured several tense moments, including an early offside goal by Buriram’s Zulj, and City goalkeeper Patrick Beach making critical saves to keep his team in the game. Notably, Buriram’s coach Mark Jackson was on the sidelines just twelve days after departing from Central Coast Mariners, adding layers to the match’s narrative.

Injury concerns also surfaced, with City’s Harry Shillington substituted after sustaining a concussion from a head clash. The intensity of the match only escalated from there, culminating in a thrilling finish that will surely resonate with fans.

Looking ahead, Melbourne City faces Perth Glory in the A-League on Saturday before returning to the Asian Champions League against Machida Zelvia, home to Socceroos striker Mitch Duke, on November 4, 2023. The stakes are high as City aims to build on this momentum and secure their spot in the next round.
