Matildas Star Ellie Carpenter Thrives in Chelsea Challenge

UPDATE: Matildas star Ellie Carpenter is thriving in her new challenge at Chelsea, declaring her move from OL Lyon was the right decision just months after joining the Super League giants. Carpenter, 25, made the switch in July 2023, aiming for glory at the upcoming Asian Cup on home soil next year.

Despite facing fierce competition for game time, Carpenter expressed confidence in her choice, stating, “For me, the move to Chelsea was the best thing for my football career at this time.” After five successful years at Lyon, where she became the first Australian to win a Women’s Champions League winner’s medal, Carpenter is ready to embrace the intensity of the English league.

In her first season at Chelsea, Carpenter has already played five matches, adjusting to a new, competitive training environment. She emphasized how the challenge is not only pushing her on the field but also enhancing her overall game. “Every game is hard and the training environment is intense,” she added, showcasing her determination to earn a starting position.

Carpenter reunites with Sonia Bompastor, her former coach at Lyon, who guided her to a second Champions League trophy in 2022. Reflecting on her time at Lyon, Carpenter stated, “Being at Lyon for five years was amazing for my career. I think I developed so much as a player.” Yet, she feels it’s time to step out of her comfort zone.

As Carpenter settles into her new role, she is also gearing up for international duty. She will join her Chelsea teammate Sam Kerr for a much-anticipated return to the Matildas as they prepare to face Wales in Cardiff on Saturday. Four days later, Australia will challenge European champions England in Derby.

With 13 capped Matildas currently in the Super League, Carpenter believes Australia’s familiarity with their friendly opponents will be a crucial advantage. “We know their game,” she said, highlighting the camaraderie and competition among Australian players in top European leagues.

Carpenter’s journey is not just about football; it’s a testament to resilience and ambition. As she fights for her place at Chelsea, the focus is also on making a significant impact with the Matildas in upcoming matches. Fans and teammates are eager to witness how this talented defender will shape her legacy in both club and international football.

Stay tuned for more updates on Carpenter’s performance and the Matildas’ upcoming fixtures as they aim for success on the global stage.
