BYD has introduced a new plug-in hybrid variant of its Atto 2 model in Europe just days after Australian journalists experienced the all-electric version. This latest announcement highlights BYD’s commitment to expanding its vehicle offerings in light of changing market dynamics, particularly in response to the European Union’s tariffs on Chinese-made electric vehicles.
The Atto 2 DM-i will feature two drivetrain options, although specific details remain limited. Each variant will come equipped with different battery packs and power outputs, along with distinct range estimates. Notably, one configuration is projected to deliver a combined hybrid and electric range of an impressive 1,020 km, complemented by an electric-only range of 90 km.
Visual and Design Changes
To differentiate between the electric and plug-in hybrid models, the Atto 2 DM-i will include subtle visual changes. The DM-i variants will bear unique badging and feature a modified design for the lower air intake, allowing for increased airflow to the engine bay. Additionally, the striking Midnight Blue color will be exclusive to the DM-i models.
Full specifications and pricing details for the Atto 2 DM-i are anticipated to be released when the model launches in Europe in November 2023. Pre-sales are expected to follow shortly thereafter, with the first units projected to reach dealerships across Europe during the first quarter of 2026.
Market Strategy and Australian Implications
Currently, it remains unclear whether BYD plans to introduce the plug-in hybrid option to the Australian Atto 2 lineup. In light of recent EU tariffs on electric vehicles manufactured in China, many Chinese automakers, including BYD, are shifting their sales strategies in Europe toward plug-in hybrids, which may mitigate the impact of these tariffs.
In Australia, the Atto 2 electric version measures 4,310 mm in length and will be available with a single drivetrain that includes a 130 kW motor producing 290 Nm of torque, driving the front wheels. The model is powered by a 51.3 kWh lithium iron phosphate (LFP) battery capable of DC fast charging at rates up to 82 kW, offering an estimated range of 345 km based on the WLTP standard.
While full specifications and pricing for the Atto 2 electric variant have not yet been finalized, it is anticipated that the base model will be priced in the low to mid-$30,000 range, with the premium variant expected to approach $40,000.
As BYD continues to expand its presence in international markets, the introduction of the Atto 2 DM-i hybrid variant underscores the company’s adaptability to evolving global automotive trends and regulatory environments.
