Ella Bent Aims for Fourth Win in $27,000 Race at Albury Today

JUST IN: Apprentice jockey Ella Bent is set to make headlines today as she aims for her fourth victory in five rides aboard the impressive grey gelding, Grey Lad, in the $27,000 Benchmark 66 Hcp at Albury. This thrilling race, scheduled for July 15, 2023, promises to be a pivotal moment for both Bent and Grey Lad, who has transformed dramatically since she joined the team.

Since partnering with Bent last month, Grey Lad has surged in form, moving from a modest record of two wins out of 20 to an impressive string of victories. Under Bent’s guidance, Grey Lad won his first race with her at Berrigan, followed by subsequent wins at Wodonga and Albury. With Bent in the saddle, the seven-year-old gelding has blossomed, showcasing remarkable potential.

Trainer Craig Widdison attributes Grey Lad’s success to the critical jockey change. “The jockey change and putting Ella on has made the difference,” Widdison stated. Bent’s daily work with Grey Lad has created a bond that has revitalized the horse’s spirit. “He just loves her,” Widdison added, emphasizing that Bent’s gentle approach has allowed Grey Lad to perform at his best.

“Previously, when other jockeys have ridden him, he resented it and would throw his head in the air,” Widdison explained. “But with Ella, we’ve seen a complete turnaround.”

As Grey Lad prepares for today’s race, Widdison notes that the horse’s versatility allows him to adapt to different race strategies. “He doesn’t have to lead to win,” Widdison said, highlighting Bent’s ability to keep Grey Lad happy in any position during the race. With the horse starting from barrier 1 and carrying only 57kg due to Bent’s claim, conditions are favorable for another victory.

Bent, just 22 years old, has quickly made a name for herself in the racing world. Having recently transitioned from showjumping to racing, she has already notched up seven wins from 28 rides. Widdison believes Bent’s future is bright, praising her work ethic and calm demeanor under pressure. “Ella will certainly go places,” he stated, confident in her potential and skill.

As the race draws near, all eyes will be on Albury, where Bent and Grey Lad look to capitalize on their momentum. With the excitement building, racing fans are eager to see if they can secure another victory today. Stay tuned for live updates on this thrilling event as it unfolds!
