Alana King Shatters Record with 7-18 as Australia Crushes South Africa

UPDATE: In an electrifying performance, Alana King has made history by claiming a record-breaking 7 wickets for just 18 runs as Australia dominated South Africa by seven wickets in their final league match of the Women’s Cricket World Cup today in Indore, India. This stunning achievement marks the first-ever seven-wicket haul in the tournament’s history.

King’s remarkable spell dismantled South Africa, who were bowled out for a mere 97 runs in just 24 overs. Australia swiftly chased down the target, reaching 98 for 3 in just 16.5 overs, extending their unbeaten streak to 16 matches since 2022.

In a match that ended South Africa’s five-match winning streak, King surpassed the previous best bowling figures of 6 for 10 held by Jacqueline Lord since 1982. “We expected a little bit of movement from the wicket, but I am happy to extract as much out of it as possible,” King stated after receiving the Player of the Match award. “I know I can play different roles. I am happy to do the job for Australia today.”

South Africa’s innings began with promise but quickly crumbled under King’s onslaught. After a solid start, where captain Laura Wolvaardt scored 31 runs, the team collapsed from 42 for 2 to 60 for 6 in just six overs. King’s incredible performance saw her claim four wickets without conceding a run, including two in consecutive deliveries.

Australia’s chase was spearheaded by Beth Mooney, who scored 42 runs, and Georgia Voll, who remained not out at 38. The victory not only solidified Australia’s position at the top of the league table with six wins from seven games but also set them up for a semifinal clash against co-host India in Navi Mumbai on Thursday.

South Africa currently sits second in the standings with five wins, but they face uncertainty as they await the outcome of England’s match against New Zealand tomorrow, which could impact their semifinal prospects. The league stage will conclude with a double-header in Visakhapatnam and Bangladesh also facing India.

The match showcased not only King’s extraordinary talent but also the team’s resilience as they continue to be a formidable force in women’s cricket. Fans can expect thrilling action as the tournament progresses towards its exciting conclusion.
