Shark Attack Victim Wasn’t Using Safety Device

Steven Payne, a swimmer at Wharton Beach in Esperance, was tragically killed in a shark attack in March 2023. An inquest revealed that at the time of the attack, Payne was not wearing a shark deterrent device, which could potentially have altered the outcome of the incident. The coroner noted that the attack by the great white shark took Payne by surprise, as it struck from behind.

Details from the Inquest

The inquest, held in Western Australia, provided insights into the circumstances surrounding Payne’s death. Testimonies indicated that he would have been unaware of the impending threat until it was too late. The coroner highlighted the importance of safety measures for beachgoers, especially in areas known for shark activity. While deterrent devices are not foolproof, they are recommended as a precautionary measure.

Witnesses at the beach described the scene as chaotic, with panic ensuing as the attack occurred. Emergency services were called to the scene, but despite their prompt response, Payne was pronounced dead shortly after being pulled from the water.

Community Response and Safety Measures

The tragic incident has sparked discussions about beach safety in shark-prone areas. Local authorities have been urged to increase awareness and encourage the use of personal deterrent devices. These devices work by emitting electrical pulses designed to deter sharks from approaching.

Wharton Beach is a popular location for both locals and tourists, known for its scenic views and clear waters. However, the recent attack has led to calls for improved safety measures and increased vigilance among beachgoers.

In the wake of Payne’s death, the community has rallied together, with many calling for better education on the risks posed by sharks and the benefits of using deterrents. A memorial service was held to honor Payne, with friends and family paying tribute to his adventurous spirit and love for the ocean.

As discussions continue, authorities are considering additional measures to enhance safety, such as surveillance and increased signage. The incident serves as a stark reminder of the unpredictable nature of the ocean and the importance of preparedness.
