Whittlesea Council Unveils $107 Million Development Achievements

UPDATE: Whittlesea Council has just endorsed its annual report, revealing significant infrastructure and community development achievements from the last financial year. Mayor Martin Taylor emphasized the collaborative effort among the council, residents, and partner organizations, stating they are “building a place for all.”

The report highlights an impressive delivery of over 113 projects through a robust $107 million capital works program. Key initiatives include the redevelopment of playgrounds, enhancements to shopping precincts, and vital road projects such as the $7.9 million extension at Plenty Road and Everton Drive in Mernda.

Sport and recreation took center stage with the opening of a $2.6 million FIFA-accredited synthetic soccer pitch at Partridge Recreation Reserve in Lalor. The council is also making strides on the regional sports precinct in Mernda, which was awarded a $42.14 million contract in September 2024. This project will soon feature an indoor stadium and outdoor netball courts, significantly boosting local sports facilities.

Additionally, the council has advanced the $2.4 million Aboriginal Gathering Place project at bunjil nganga Parkland Quarry Hills, including the planting of over 7,000 indigenous trees. Meanwhile, a new $16.2 million community center in Wollert and a $11.4 million facility for Donnybrook are also progressing.

During the council meeting on October 21, 2024, Cr Jarrodd Lappin praised the report for showcasing Whittlesea as a “forward-thinking” council. “The annual report paints an incredibly good picture and drives home the fact this city is well-run, it’s organized, and it’s a forward-thinking council,” he stated. “There’s great work being done to build up our growth suburbs and revitalize our established areas.”

Other highlights from the report include $2.5 million in grants awarded to support local groups, businesses, and individuals. The council also launched improved tourism websites and a new customer service portal, enhancing community engagement.

This annual report not only details past achievements but also sets the stage for future growth and development in the City of Whittlesea. Residents and stakeholders alike are encouraged to stay tuned for ongoing updates as the council continues to build a vibrant community that everyone can be proud to call home.
