BREAKING: Karratha has made headlines as a finalist in the 2025 Tidy Towns Sustainable Communities Awards, with a local teenager and the City’s Youth Shed being recognized for their impactful environmental initiatives. Finalists were announced earlier this week, spotlighting over 30 regional and remote communities across Western Australia vying for nine prestigious awards.
Ella Dale, a Karratha teenager, is in the running for the Youth Leader category with her innovative project, Greener Karratha. This youth-led tree nursery and community shade initiative aims to enhance local green spaces. “I wanted to make our town a bit greener and give people some shade,” Ella expressed, reflecting her genuine excitement about the nomination.
The Karratha Youth Shed also shines as a finalist in the Environmental Education category, recognized for their Sola Buddy Program. This program emphasizes sustainable practices and environmental stewardship, reinforcing the community’s commitment to a greener future.
The winners of each category, along with the overall State winner who will represent WA at the National Tidy Towns Sustainability Awards, will be unveiled on 28 November 2025 at a special event at Optus Stadium in Perth.
Elizabeth Carr, chair of the Keep Australia Beautiful Council (KABC), praised all finalists for their exceptional dedication to environmental change. “The Tidy Towns Sustainable Communities program is a fantastic opportunity to celebrate the achievements of regional communities of all sizes,” she stated, emphasizing the importance of collaboration and community spirit in achieving remarkable outcomes.
These recognitions not only honor individual and community efforts but also highlight the pressing need for sustainable practices as climate change continues to impact our environment. Karratha’s initiatives serve as inspiration for other communities striving for a greener future.
As the excitement builds for the upcoming awards event, all eyes will be on Karratha as they await the announcement of the winners. The passion and commitment shown by Ella Dale and the Youth Shed exemplify the spirit of innovation and resilience needed to tackle today’s environmental challenges.
