Community Cricketers Honor Ben Austin After Tragic Death

UPDATE: Community cricketers in Ferntree Gully, Melbourne, are laying down their bats in a heartfelt tribute to 17-year-old Ben Austin, who tragically died from injuries sustained in a freak training accident. This devastating loss has prompted an overwhelming outpouring of grief, with over $130,000 raised to support his family and create lasting memorials in his honor.

Ben suffered a fatal injury on Thursday, October 12, 2023, when he was struck in the neck by a ball while batting in the nets. Two days later, his family returned to the cricket club where his passion for the sport ignited, laying his bat and gloves down for the final time. Ben’s father, Jace Austin, expressed deep sorrow, stating, “To hear Benny’s voice again, I’d do anything.”

As tributes pour in from around the world, cricket matches within the local Ferntree Gully and District Cricket Association have been postponed this weekend. The local pub is opening its doors on Saturday, October 14, 2023, for players, members, and supporters to come together and share their memories of Ben.

Before the start of the Sheffield Shield fixture between Victoria and Tasmania on Friday, October 13, 2023, players observed a poignant moment of silence to honor Ben. Another tribute took place at the Melbourne Cricket Ground (MCG) before the men’s T20 International match between Australia and India, following a similar tribute for the women’s teams a day earlier.

Mr. Austin emotionally displayed Ben’s cap, which bears his number 512, stating that the local club president would represent the family during the T20 match. “Benny will be there. He won’t miss it,” he said, highlighting Ben’s unwavering spirit.

The tragic incident occurred while Ben was wearing a helmet, with a friend confirming the bowler was using a “wanger,” a plastic device that slings a ball. This accident echoes the heartbreaking memory of Phillip Hughes, a Test cricketer who also lost his life after a similar incident over a decade ago.

As the cricket community rallies to support Ben’s family, the focus remains on the tragic loss of a young talent whose love for the sport touched many. The collective grief is palpable, and the urgent need for supportive measures in youth sports is clearer than ever.

For those wishing to contribute to Ben’s memorial funds, details can be found on crowdfunding platforms, as his family aims to create lasting tributes in his memory. The community stands united, reflecting on the fragility of life while celebrating Ben’s vibrant spirit and passion for cricket.
