Police Officers Assaulted Amid Chaos at Halloween Party in Perth

Two police officers were assaulted while attempting to disperse a large, unruly Halloween party in Byford, a suburb of Perth, on the evening of October 27, 2023. The incident occurred shortly after 21:30 when officers responded to reports of a gathering that had spiraled out of control, with approximately 400 attendees, many of whom were intoxicated.

As police arrived at the property on Linton Street North, they faced immediate hostility. A 16-year-old girl, who has since been charged with two counts of assaulting a public officer, allegedly punched one officer in the face and kicked another in the knee. Additionally, a 21-year-old man from Thornlie was charged with obstructing police, disorderly conduct, and drug possession. A 17-year-old boy was also issued a move-on order during the chaotic scene.

Witnesses described a chaotic atmosphere as officers attempted to restore order. Jean, a resident of Linton Street North, recounted the escalating situation, stating, “All of a sudden I saw flashing lights through the windows… the road was full of police cars — four or five of them — and unmarked vans.”

Chaos and Response

The party’s atmosphere deteriorated quickly, with reports of aggressive behavior from some attendees. Jean observed one young man attempting to confront police officers after being instructed to calm down. “One teenager came up, very belligerent, started yelling and screaming… and he went to run at the police,” she said, likening the scene to something out of a television drama.

Police reinforcements were called in to manage the disturbance, leading to several arrests and the eventual shutdown of the party. By Saturday morning, residents began clearing debris, including bottles and shoes, left scattered along the street.

The gathering coincided with the recent opening of the Byford rail extension, which some residents believe contributed to the influx of partygoers. “One of the other neighbours said, ‘Oh, we knew as soon as that train came in that it would bring trouble,'” Jean noted.

Community Reactions and Infrastructure Investment

The Minister for Community Services, Simon McGurk, addressed concerns regarding the rail extension, emphasizing its importance for the community. “I haven’t heard any reports that that party was more accessible because of the [Byford] train line,” he asserted. McGurk defended the investment in infrastructure, stating, “We make no apology for putting in record infrastructure to our outer suburbs to make sure that people can be connected to work, to training and education and to the rest of the community.”

As the local community processes the events of that night, the incident serves as a reminder of the challenges that can arise in managing large gatherings. Police continue to encourage responsible behavior during such events, highlighting the importance of community cooperation in maintaining safety and order.
