Heathcote President Relaxes with Bowls Amid Footy Demands

UPDATE: Brett Kelly, president of the Heathcote Football Netball Club, finds solace in the competitive yet relaxed atmosphere of bowling as he navigates the pressures of leading the town’s major sporting organization. Every Saturday afternoon, Kelly trades the high-stakes environment of football for the greens at the Heathcote Bowling Club, where he competes in Bendigo’s weekend pennant competition.

Kelly recently completed his first season as president of the football-netball club, and he admits that the transition to bowling has been a welcome relief. “Footy certainly takes a lot out of you… by the end of the season, you’re looking for something a bit relaxing,” Kelly stated. His experience reflects the juggling act many sports leaders face, combining passion with the demands of managing a significant sporting entity.

The Heathcote Bowling Club has provided Kelly with an essential outlet. He explains how the sport allows him to connect socially without the intensity that comes with football management. “I can roll up, put my shoes on, and have a bowl without worrying about stacking the fridge or cooking a barbecue; it’s a lot more low-key,” he noted.

This season, the Heathcote team has made impressive strides, moving up to division two after winning division three last year. With a current record of 5-0, they are quickly establishing themselves as a formidable presence in the league. On Saturday, they triumphed over Kangaroo Flat with a tight 71-68 victory, solidifying their second-place position behind only South Bendigo.

Kelly spoke about the team’s success, saying, “There were a few of the older players worried we wouldn’t win a game this year, but we’re undefeated at the moment.” The confidence is palpable as the team prepares for the next challenge, possibly even aiming for the finals.

In addition to his bowling commitments, Kelly recently participated in Bendigo’s qualifying rounds for the state championships. Teaming up with other club members, they faced premier league bowlers, gaining valuable experience despite a mixed performance. “We won one game and lost two, but it was a great opportunity to challenge ourselves,” he remarked.

The pressures of running a football club extend beyond the field. Kelly highlighted ongoing challenges such as securing sponsorships and managing volunteers, a task that has become increasingly demanding. “We’re turning over hundreds of thousands of dollars, and the pressure with sponsorship and volunteers is immense,” he explained.

As the football season concluded in August, Kelly’s responsibilities did not fade; they shifted. He continues to work diligently behind the scenes, ensuring that the club remains financially viable and engaged with the community. His dual role as president and bowler illustrates the balancing act many sports leaders must navigate, striving for both personal joy and community success.

The Heathcote Bowling Club is more than just a leisure activity for Kelly; it’s a vital part of his routine that helps him recharge. “With bowls, you can take it socially or work hard and try to be the best you can be,” he said, encapsulating the essence of why he values this sport so much.

As the season progresses, all eyes will be on Heathcote as they continue to defy expectations. With Kelly at the helm, the club is not only aiming for success on the greens but also cultivating a strong sense of community and camaraderie.

Stay tuned for more updates on their journey as they aim for the finals and perhaps even a championship title.
