Members of the Rotary community, alongside local MP Justine Elliot, have officially launched the Rotary 2025 campaign titled “Say No to Domestic and Family Violence” in Tweed Heads. This initiative aims to enhance awareness and education regarding domestic violence, with a focus on fostering respectful relationships within communities.
The campaign is part of the broader 16 Days of Activism, an international movement that runs annually from November 25 to December 10. The objective is to eliminate gender-based violence and promote the protection of women and girls worldwide. Since its inception in 2018, Rotary clubs across Australia, New Zealand, and the Pacific Islands have been actively engaging in programs to combat domestic violence.
Justine Elliot emphasized the campaign’s grassroots nature, which originated in Ballina. She noted, “This grassroots campaign started in Ballina and is an excellent example of a community-led initiative aimed at promoting respectful relationships.”
Throughout the 16 days, Rotary will organize various events such as walks, runs, and bike rides to amplify the voices of domestic violence survivors. Elliot remarked, “The 16 Days of Activism provides an important moment for us to reflect on how we can all work together, but of course this resolve must be year-round.”
In addition to promoting awareness, Elliot acknowledged the contributions of Dave Harmon from the Rotary Ballina Branch and fellow members for their dedication to the cause. “As your local MP, I’m committed to continuing to work with everyone to end violence against women and children,” she stated.
