Urgent Arrest: Cumbalum Man Charged in Online Grooming Case

UPDATE: A 64-year-old man from Cumbalum has been arrested by the NSW Sex Crimes Squad for allegedly attempting to groom a child online. The arrest is part of an ongoing investigation dubbed Strike Force Trawler, which targets the sexual exploitation of children through the internet.

On November 3, 2025, at approximately 7:15 AM, detectives executed a search warrant at the suspect’s residence near Ballina. Authorities report that the man engaged in sexually explicit conversations, believing he was communicating with an adult posing as a mother with a young daughter.

The investigation began in October 2025, when detectives from the Child Exploitation Internet Unit (CEIU) identified the suspect’s online activities as suspicious. The operation highlights the ongoing efforts to combat child exploitation online, emphasizing the need for vigilance in protecting vulnerable individuals.

Following his arrest, the man was taken to Ballina Police Station, where he was charged with using a carriage service to groom a child. He was denied bail and appeared in the Bail Division of the Local Court yesterday. The court has scheduled his next appearance for January 1, 2026, at Ballina Local Court.

This case underscores the critical work of law enforcement in addressing online child exploitation. As investigations continue, authorities urge the public to remain alert to suspicious online behavior and report any concerns to the police.
