Insurance Council Expands Severe Storm Declaration for Queensland

The Insurance Council of Australia (ICA) has broadened its Significant Event declaration, known as SE 254, to encompass severe spring storms that struck south-east Queensland from October 31 to November 2, 2023. This decision follows the damaging hailstorm that occurred in Brisbane on October 26, which prompted the initial declaration.

The recent storms have led to approximately 25,980 claims, with damages reported including hail-damaged vehicles, broken windows, shattered solar panels, and roof damage. Insurers have recognized that while the storms affected a wide area, certain small communities, particularly Clifton, Pratten, and Esk, have experienced significant devastation.

Insurance companies are actively monitoring claims from these regions. Many have deployed local representatives to assist affected policyholders with the claims process. This initiative aims to provide timely support and guidance to those who have suffered losses due to the recent severe weather.

The ICA’s declaration emphasizes the need for a coordinated response to help communities recover from the impact of the storms. As the situation evolves, insurers remain committed to ensuring that all claims are handled efficiently and fairly.

In light of these circumstances, the ICA urges residents to document any damage thoroughly and to reach out to their insurance providers as soon as possible. This proactive approach can facilitate a smoother claims process and help individuals start the recovery journey.
