WeCare Health has announced the introduction of universal bulk-billing, effective November 1, 2025, to address rising healthcare costs impacting the community. This initiative, supported by the Australian government through its Bulk-Billing Practice Incentive Program, aims to remove financial barriers to accessing medical care.
Dr Pavan Phanindra, a key figure at WeCare Health, highlighted that the decision aligns with the practice’s founding principles. WeCare Health was the first medical facility in Bathurst to operate seven days a week, ensuring that residents have access to non-emergency care every day. “The foundation was to prevent emergency department presentations,” Dr Phanindra stated.
The decision to implement universal bulk-billing was made after consulting with all staff members, who recognized the potential benefits for the community. Dr Phanindra emphasized that the move responds to increasing cost-of-living pressures and health inequities faced by families. “We felt the community should not have a financial barrier for quality medical care,” he noted.
This transition means that nearly 100 percent of consultations at WeCare Health will not incur out-of-pocket expenses for patients, a significant increase from the approximately 85 percent coverage prior to the change. “Most of the items which are Medicare eligible, for example, GP management plans and mental healthcare plans, will all be covered under Medicare,” Dr Phanindra explained.
The universal bulk-billing initiative is expected to promote healthier outcomes within the community. Dr Phanindra pointed out that it will facilitate more cardiovascular health assessments, diabetes prevention, and overall wellness initiatives. “All the providers and staff are on board,” he affirmed.
By removing financial obstacles, WeCare Health aims to encourage more residents to seek preventive healthcare services. The practice believes that this approach will not only enhance the community’s health but also create a more resilient population.
As healthcare affordability remains a pressing issue, WeCare Health’s universal bulk-billing initiative exemplifies a proactive response to community needs. This strategic move marks a significant step towards ensuring that quality medical care is accessible to all residents in Bathurst.
