Mark Chapman Shines as New Zealand Edges West Indies in T20 Clash

In a thrilling T20 match on March 14, 2024, at Auckland’s Eden Park, New Zealand narrowly defeated the West Indies by three runs. The victory leveled the T20 series at one match apiece, with standout performances marking the encounter. Mark Chapman played a pivotal role, scoring a remarkable 78 runs from just 28 balls, including a stunning half-century in only 19 deliveries.

Chapman’s explosive batting helped propel New Zealand to a total of 207 runs, with the team scoring an impressive 100 runs between the ninth and sixteenth overs after being asked to bat first. After an initial struggle, the West Indies faced a challenging target but showed resilience throughout their innings.

The West Indies, initially hindered by New Zealand’s effective spin bowling, found themselves at a precarious 6-94 after 13 overs. However, a late-game surge led by Rovman Powell, who scored 45 runs off just 16 balls, brought the tourists back into contention. Contributions from Romario Shepherd (34 runs off 16 balls) and Matthew Forde (29 runs not out from 13 balls) set up a nail-biting finish, requiring 16 runs in the final over with three wickets remaining.

New Zealand’s Kyle Jamieson was entrusted with bowling the last over. Despite conceding four runs from the first ball and a no-ball on the second, Jamieson managed to dismiss Powell on the fourth delivery, caught by Chapman, who completed a stellar performance with three catches. The West Indies ultimately finished their innings at 204 runs, falling just short of victory.

Reflecting on the match, Chapman acknowledged the strength of the West Indies, stating, “The West Indies boys, they’re so strong they’re never really out of the game. It was amazing that the boys held their nerve at the end.” His innings transformed from a slow start of 12 runs off 10 balls to a blistering 65 runs off the next 22 balls, significantly impacting the match’s outcome.

New Zealand’s batting lineup also saw contributions from Daryl Mitchell, who remained unbeaten on 28 runs from 14 balls, and Mitchell Santner, who added 18 runs from eight balls. Opener Tim Robinson scored 39 runs, setting a solid foundation for the innings.

West Indies’ bowlers struggled at times, with Jayden Seales conceding 61 runs in his four overs, a challenging outing for the young bowler. The West Indies now turn their attention to back-to-back matches against New Zealand in Nelson on March 17 and 18, 2024, as both teams look to gain an edge in the T20 series.
