URGENT UPDATE: Scammers have exploited an AI-generated deepfake of WA Premier Roger Cook to promote a fraudulent investment scheme, prompting an immediate warning from Consumer Protection WA. This alarming revelation comes as the deepfake video circulates on YouTube, falsely claiming government endorsement for an investment requiring a $400 contribution.
Officials confirmed the scam was flagged on Friday, October 20, 2023, as the deepfake video presented a convincing imitation of Mr. Cook, showcasing his likeness and voice. The misleading advertisement claims to be “endorsed by the Government and open to everyone,” raising significant concerns among authorities.
Consumer Protection WA stated,
“This is a deepfake investment scam created using artificial intelligence, designed to steal your money and personal information. The State Government does not promote or endorse private investment schemes, especially not through unsolicited videos or social media ads.”
The agency is actively investigating the matter and has reported the scam to the domain host for swift removal, aiming to prevent further spread. This incident follows similar deepfake scams involving high-profile figures, including a recent case in August 2023, where a clone of Prime Minister Anthony Albanese promised viewers earnings of over $25,000 for signing up to a dubious scheme.
Scammers have increasingly targeted influential figures like Gina Rinehart and Andrew Forrest, who has been locked in a legal battle with Meta, Facebook’s parent company, over the hosting of fake ads featuring his likeness. A recent court hearing revealed Forrest’s image appeared in at least 230,000 fraudulent ads since 2019.
This latest incident serves as a stark reminder for the public to remain vigilant against such scams. Consumer Protection WA urges individuals to report any suspicious advertisements and to verify the authenticity of investment opportunities before making any financial commitments.
As the investigation continues, authorities are expected to release more details. Watch for updates on this developing situation, as it poses a significant risk to potential victims. Stay informed and protect your personal information from these deceitful tactics.
