Brisbane Roar secured an impressive 3-0 victory over Newcastle Jets, propelling the team to fourth place in the A-League Men standings. The match took place on March 15, 2024, at Sunshine Coast Stadium, where the Roar showcased their resurgence under the guidance of coach Michael Valkanis.
The home team opened the scoring in the 31st minute with a well-executed set piece. Georgios Vrakas delivered a precise corner kick to the near post, allowing central defender Lucas Herrington to skillfully head the ball into the net, marking a highlight in his young career. Herrington, just 19 years old, expressed his excitement, stating, “I don’t score many goals but it was great to score in front of the fans on the Sunny Coast.”
In the second half, captain Jay O’Shea extended the lead by converting a penalty, bringing his tally to 19 successful penalties from 20 attempts in the ALM. The match concluded with a final goal from Quinn MacNicol, whose powerful shot rebounded off the post and inadvertently deflected off Jets goalkeeper James Delianov for an own goal in the 89th minute.
Brisbane dominated the match, outshooting the Jets nine to one in the first half, which highlighted their tactical superiority. The Roar’s performance illustrated their preparation and focus on stifling the Jets’ usually dynamic attack. Coach Valkanis noted the significant improvement compared to last season, when the team finished in 12th place.
Newcastle Jets struggled defensively, having now conceded 12 goals in just four matches. The Jets’ coach, Mark Milligan, expressed disappointment not only with the result but with the overall performance, stating, “The result was disappointing, and the performance was not there either.”
Although Jets forward Will Dobson had an early chance in the second half, his lobbed attempt was easily handled by Roar goalkeeper Dean Bouzanis. The match’s decisive moment came in the 79th minute when substitute Henry Hore drew a foul inside the box, leading to O’Shea’s penalty that sent the home fans into a frenzy.
Valkanis and O’Shea have established a solid partnership, characterized by a shared determination to succeed that resonates throughout the team. Additionally, Herrington’s rising profile as a talent in Australian football has earned him a spot with Major League Soccer’s Colorado Rapids, starting in January 2025.
The Roar’s victory marks a significant step in their campaign, demonstrating their ability to combine solid defensive play with effective attacking strategies. As they prepare for their next match, the Roar will look to maintain their momentum and build upon this successful outing against Newcastle.
