Truck Crashes into South Korean Market, Claiming Two Lives

A light truck crashed into a bustling market in Bucheon, South Korea, on Thursday, October 5, 2023, resulting in the deaths of two individuals and injuries to 18 others. The incident occurred around 13:30 local time, when the truck plowed approximately 150 metres along a passageway lined with market stalls before coming to a stop, according to emergency officials and reports from the Yonhap News Agency.

The driver, a man in his 60s, reportedly accelerated suddenly, causing the vehicle to reverse for 28 metres before speeding towards the outdoor market. Eyewitness accounts and CCTV footage captured the moments leading up to the crash, which showed shoppers engaged in their daily activities when the blue truck barreled into the market. Two of the injured individuals later succumbed to cardiac arrest, as confirmed by a fire official during a televised briefing.

Investigation Underway

Authorities have stated that the driver was not under the influence of alcohol at the time of the crash. The police have since taken him into custody for questioning as they work to determine the exact circumstances surrounding the incident. The vehicle has been handed over to investigators for further inspection.

Emergency services responded quickly to the scene, transporting the injured to nearby hospitals for treatment. The local community is now reeling from the shock of the event, with many expressing their condolences to the victims and their families.

The market, located about 20 kilometers west of the capital, Seoul, has been a popular destination for locals and tourists alike, providing a vibrant atmosphere for shopping and socializing. The incident raises concerns about safety in crowded areas and the need for thorough investigations into such tragedies.

As investigations continue, the local authorities are expected to provide further updates on the situation and any measures that may be implemented to prevent similar occurrences in the future.
