URGENT UPDATE: Three jet ski riders have been charged following a shocking incident in which they allegedly drove dangerously close to a pod of dolphins off Brighton Beach, Adelaide. The incident occurred on August 10, 2023, and was captured on video by stunned beachgoers, leading to immediate reports to South Australia Police and the Department for Environment and Water (DEW).
Authorities allege that the men violated strict regulations designed to protect marine life, driving their jet skis within prohibited distances from the protected bottlenose dolphins. This behavior is particularly concerning as these dolphins are safeguarded under South Australian law, where maximum penalties can reach $100,000 or two years in jail for such offenses.
A 19-year-old Belair man has been charged with two counts of using a jet ski to interfere with or harass a protected animal, alongside two counts of undertaking an act that affects a protected animal. Additionally, a 20-year-old Glengowrie man faces one count for the same incident, while another 20-year-old from Goolwa South is charged for allegedly bringing a boat within 50 meters of dolphins at Seacliff.
All three men are scheduled to appear before the Christies Beach Magistrates Court on December 22, 2025. Their jet skis and the boat involved have been seized by DEW as part of the investigation.
Lisien Loan, a spokesperson for DEW, emphasized that jet skis pose significant disruption to dolphins due to their loud engines and erratic movements. She reiterated the importance of observing marine life from a safe distance to avoid disturbing their natural behaviors, including feeding and socializing.
This incident has raised alarms about the treatment of marine wildlife in South Australia and highlights the need for stricter enforcement of protective regulations. As authorities continue to investigate, the community is reminded to respect local wildlife and adhere to conservation laws.
