Prince William Cheers on Sara Cox as She Raises £4.1 Million

On November 14, 2025, Prince William delivered an unexpected video message to BBC Radio 2 DJ Sara Cox, encouraging her to persevere as she concluded her significant charity challenge. Cox raised over £4.1 million for Children in Need during her ambitious 135-mile Great Northern Marathon Challenge. The royal congratulated her for her incredible effort as she neared the finish line of her demanding five-day journey.

In his heartfelt message, Prince William praised Cox for her determination. “Sara, massive congratulations for what you are doing. You are so nearly there, just a little bit further,” he said. He added, “I know the people of Pudsey will all come out and welcome you with huge open arms, big hugs… and hopefully, lots of your favourite crumpets. Keep going. You’ve done fantastically well, and the nation is so proud of you.”

Cox, who was visibly moved by the support, expressed her gratitude, saying, “Wow, thanks William, big thank you! Thank you, thanks that’s very nice!” The emotional moment was featured on the BBC Radio 2 Breakfast Show, hosted by Scott Mills, where it was revealed that Cox’s efforts had surpassed the £4.1 million mark.

Community Support and Endurance Challenge

The journey undertaken by Cox was not just about raising funds but also about connecting with communities. Helen Thomas, the Head of Radio 2, acknowledged the overwhelming support from the public. “Sara has truly captured the nation’s heart,” she noted. “The unwavering support from the Radio 2 listeners has been extraordinary, and we couldn’t be prouder of Sara and everyone who has cheered her on every step of the way.”

Cox’s challenge involved traversing four counties—Northumberland, Durham, North Yorkshire, and West Yorkshire—on foot, relying solely on her determination and stamina. This marked Radio 2’s longest-ever challenge in terms of duration, with the ultimate goal of carrying the beloved BBC Children in Need mascot, Pudsey, from border to heartland.

The event not only highlighted Cox’s physical endurance but also showcased the generosity of the British public. Crowds lined the streets, offering support through cheers and high-fives, while children held up signs to encourage her along the way. Each small gesture contributed to a collective effort, making a significant impact on the fundraising goal.

Legacy of the Challenge

As Sara Cox neared the end of her journey, the campaign resonated with many across the nation. The funds raised will directly benefit Children in Need, an initiative aimed at improving the lives of disadvantaged children across the UK. The success of this challenge demonstrates the power of community spirit and the impact of individual efforts in raising awareness and funds for essential causes.

Cox’s determination and the support from Prince William reflect a broader commitment to philanthropy and social responsibility. The culmination of her challenge not only serves as an inspiration but also reinforces the importance of coming together for a common cause. With her efforts, Sara Cox has truly made a difference, and her journey will be remembered as a remarkable testament to resilience and community support.
