UK Reaffirms Support for UNISFA’s Role in Abyei Protection

The United Kingdom expressed its strong support for the United Nations Interim Security Force for Abyei (UNISFA) during a recent UN Security Council meeting. Jennifer MacNaughtan, UK Minister Counsellor, articulated the critical role that UNISFA plays in protecting civilians in the contested Abyei region, which lies between Sudan and South Sudan. This statement came as part of the UK’s explanation of vote on the matter on October 25, 2023.

UNISFA’s Ongoing Mission

UNISFA was established in 2011 following the South Sudanese independence referendum. The mission aims to oversee the security situation in Abyei and ensure the protection of its residents, who have faced violence and instability. During her address, MacNaughtan highlighted the urgency of maintaining this peacekeeping presence, stating that UNISFA is vital for safeguarding the civilian population.

MacNaughtan emphasized that the UK recognizes the challenges faced by UNISFA in fulfilling its mandate, particularly in the context of ongoing tensions between Sudan and South Sudan. She noted the importance of adequate resources and support for the mission to effectively carry out its responsibilities. The UK government remains committed to ensuring that UNISFA has the necessary tools to protect those living in Abyei.

International Cooperation and Support

During her remarks, MacNaughtan called for enhanced international cooperation to bolster UNISFA’s efforts. She urged all member states to contribute to the mission, stressing that collective action is essential for achieving long-term stability in the region. The UK’s position reflects a broader commitment to multilateralism and the belief that collaborative efforts are crucial for addressing complex security challenges.

The Security Council meeting also underscored the importance of dialogue between Sudan and South Sudan. MacNaughtan reiterated that peaceful negotiations are key to resolving underlying disputes, which continue to threaten the safety of Abyei’s residents. The UK has consistently advocated for diplomatic solutions that prioritize the well-being of civilians caught in the crossfire of political conflict.

As the situation in Abyei remains precarious, the UK’s continued support for UNISFA signals a commitment to international peacekeeping efforts and the protection of vulnerable populations. The UK government’s stance aligns with the broader international consensus on the importance of maintaining stability in the region.

In conclusion, the ongoing support from the UK for UNISFA reflects a recognition of the critical role that peacekeeping missions play in safeguarding civilians. As tensions persist in Abyei, the international community is urged to remain vigilant and committed to supporting efforts aimed at achieving lasting peace.
