Cooper Williams Joins Australia U16 Rugby Team After Breakout Season

BREAKING: Rising star Cooper Williams has officially been selected for the Australia under 16s rugby union team, marking a significant milestone in his athletic career. The announcement comes after an impressive season with the NSW Waratahs, where Williams played a crucial role in their grand final victory over Queensland in the Super Rugby U16 championship.

The talented athlete, who has also excelled in rugby league with the Western Suburbs Magpies in the Harold Matthews Cup, expressed his disbelief at receiving this prestigious call-up. “I was shocked, I just couldn’t believe it,” said the Year 11 St Stanislaus’ College student from Canowindra. His voice filled with emotion as he recounted the moment he received the news. “My dad told me over the phone that I was named and my Nan was in the background, clapping.”

Williams is one of only 25 players selected for the national squad from thousands of aspiring athletes across Australia. “There’s so much disbelief,” he remarked, acknowledging the honor of representing his country. Williams, who plays open-side flanker, began his rugby journey at just seven years old with the Canowindra Pythons. After a four-year hiatus, he returned to the sport in under 11s and has since developed a passion for the game that continues to grow.

His journey has seen him thrive in a competitive environment at St Stanislaus’, where he started playing for his school in Year 8. Reflecting on his first match against Barker, Williams noted, “It was a big difference to what I was used to, but I still enjoyed it.” The supportive culture of Stannies rugby has fueled his enthusiasm and growth as a player.

Looking ahead, Williams is set to participate in a training camp in Tweed Heads on December 1, before facing the Queensland under 17s on December 13. “It’ll mean a lot to play for Australia,” he stated, expressing gratitude for the coaching he has received throughout his journey. “The coaches have taught me so much, from when I started in Year 8 with Mr. English to Mr. Thurston in first grade.”

This development not only highlights Williams’ exceptional talent but also serves as an inspiring story for young athletes across the region. As he prepares for this upcoming opportunity, the rugby community eagerly anticipates his performance on the national stage.

Stay tuned for more updates as Cooper Williams embarks on this exciting chapter of his rugby career!
