BYD ATTO 1 Earns Five-Star ANCAP Rating, Redefining Budget EV Safety

The BYD ATTO 1 has officially achieved a maximum five-star safety rating from ANCAP, challenging the longstanding notion that budget vehicles compromise on safety standards. This significant milestone for the Australian electric vehicle (EV) market comes as BYD launches the compact ATTO 1 with a starting price of just A$23,990, excluding on-road costs.

Raising the Bar for Budget Vehicles

For years, Australian consumers have been conditioned to believe that high safety ratings are only attainable with vehicles priced above A$40,000. The ATTO 1’s five-star ANCAP rating effectively dismantles this narrative, proving that safety can be accessible without a hefty price tag. This shift not only promotes cleaner air with the transition to electric vehicles but also ensures safer streets for everyone.

The five-star rating reflects a comprehensive performance in all of ANCAP’s rigorous assessment categories. Notably, both variants of the ATTO 1 available at launch received the same high safety rating, meaning buyers of the entry-level model benefit from the same structural protections as those who opt for higher-priced versions.

In Adult Occupant Protection, the ATTO 1 scored an impressive 82%, competing well with larger vehicles. For families, the Child Occupant Protection score of 86% is particularly noteworthy, providing reassurance for parents seeking a safe vehicle for young drivers. Additional scores include 76% for Vulnerable Road User Protection and 79% for Safety Assist, indicating the vehicle’s effectiveness in accident prevention.

Advanced Technology and Robust Structure

The ATTO 1 stands out not only for its safety scores but also for its advanced technology features. Standard equipment includes Autonomous Emergency Braking (AEB), which effectively handles various scenarios, including interactions with pedestrians and cyclists. The vehicle also incorporates Lane Departure Assist (LDA) and Emergency Lane Keeping Assist (ELKA) to enhance safety during highway driving.

Perhaps most notably, the ATTO 1 features a driver-monitoring system that uses interior cameras to ensure drivers remain attentive, addressing one of the leading causes of accidents—distraction. This technology contributes to a broader safety framework, protecting both occupants and other road users.

In terms of structural integrity, the ATTO 1 performed exceptionally well in ANCAP testing. It secured maximum points for side-impact testing and demonstrated robust performance in oblique pole testing and whiplash protection. The dedicated EV platform allows for optimized load paths, meaning the vehicle absorbs crash energy effectively, ensuring that “compact” does not equal “fragile.”

The recent conversation around electric vehicles in Australia has shifted dramatically. While “range anxiety” was once the primary concern, consumers are now focused on price parity. The ATTO 1’s starting price makes it competitive against many petrol-powered vehicles.

Stephen Collins, Chief Operating Officer of BYD Australia, emphasized the company’s commitment to high safety standards despite aggressive pricing. “Safety is fundamental to BYD’s mission, so we’re pleased to see the ATTO 1 recognized at the highest level by ANCAP. This rating further cements our commitment to delivering world-class vehicles that combine leading technology, exceptional value, and uncompromising protection for drivers, passengers, and all road users,” he stated.

The ATTO 1 represents a compelling option for tech-savvy consumers. It offers a software-defined vehicle experience with over-the-air update capabilities and a verified five-star safety rating at a price comparable to used cars. The inclusion of a Tyre Pressure Monitoring System (TPMS) and a complete suite of Advanced Driver Assistance Systems (ADAS) sets a new benchmark for value in the budget EV market.

The BYD ATTO 1 is now available for order, starting at A$23,990 excluding on-road costs. For additional details, visit the official BYD website at https://bydautomotive.com.au.
