URGENT UPDATE: The United Nations nuclear watchdog has issued a critical resolution demanding that Iran provide immediate answers regarding its enriched uranium stockpile and access to bombed nuclear facilities. The International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA) confirmed this decision during a board meeting, emphasizing that Iran must report “without delay” on the status of its nuclear materials, following military strikes on its sites earlier this year.
The IAEA’s resolution, passed with 19 votes in favor, three against, and 12 abstentions, comes five months after the United States and Israel conducted military operations targeting Iranian nuclear sites. The resolution mandates that Iran must grant the IAEA all necessary access to verify its nuclear activities and provide precise information on its nuclear material accounting.
Iran has previously claimed that its nuclear ambitions are entirely peaceful. However, the resolution’s passage prompted a warning from Tehran, suggesting that it could “adversely affect” its cooperation with the IAEA. The urgent need for clarity stems from concerns over Iran’s uranium enrichment, which includes material approaching weapons-grade levels, a situation described by the IAEA as “long overdue” for resolution.
The IAEA has not been able to inspect the facilities bombed by Israel and the US, which include three operational enrichment sites. As of June 13, 2023, the IAEA estimated Iran held 440.9 kg of uranium enriched to up to 60 percent purity. This level is dangerously close to the 90 percent purity required for weapons-grade material, raising alarms among Western powers. Experts indicate that the current stockpile could potentially be enough for 10 nuclear bombs if further enriched.
The IAEA has stated that producing and storing such high levels of enriched uranium represents “a matter of serious concern” and underscores the urgency for Iran to comply with international oversight. The agency cannot verify Iran’s current uranium levels or inspect the bombed facilities until Tehran submits a detailed report on these critical issues.
As tensions escalate, the international community is closely monitoring Iran’s response to this latest demand. The implications of Iran’s nuclear program extend beyond its borders, as global security remains at stake. The IAEA has highlighted that Iran’s cooperation is essential for transparency and safety in the region.
In the coming days, all eyes will be on Tehran to see how it responds to the UN’s demands and whether it will allow IAEA inspectors access to its facilities. The situation remains fluid, and developments will be crucial for both regional stability and international relations. Stay tuned for updates as this story unfolds.
