City of Casey Launches Urgent Campaign Against Gender Violence

URGENT UPDATE: Starting November 25, 2023, the City of Casey will kick off a vital 16-day initiative aimed at combatting gender-based violence. This global campaign, backed by over 6,000 organizations worldwide, seeks to raise awareness and drive action to end violence against women and girls.

Officials emphasize the immediate importance of this initiative, especially in light of troubling statistics from the Crime Statistics Agency, which reported a staggering 13.6 percent increase in family violence cases in Casey. The majority of those affected are women and girls, underscoring the urgent need for community action.

The campaign is titled “Casey says NO to violence” and features a powerful video highlighting the message. The video includes contributions from Victoria Police and local councillors, including Casey’s Mayor, Stefan Koomen.

“Every person in our community deserves to feel safe, respected, and valued,” said Mayor Koomen in a recent media release. “I’m proud to be part of this important campaign. The City of Casey stands united in saying NO to violence. These 16 days are a powerful reminder that change is possible when we stand together.”

Throughout the campaign, which runs until December 10, 2023, the Casey Council will provide essential resources and support services. They are committed to ensuring that victims of domestic and family violence are aware of the ongoing help available to them.

For more information on support services, residents can visit casey.vic.gov.au/family-violence-help. Additionally, anyone impacted by family violence can reach out to the national counselling service at 1800 RESPECT or call 1800 737 732, available 24 hours for specialist support and advice.

As Casey embarks on this crucial initiative, the community is urged to participate actively and spread the message. Together, we can make a difference in the fight against gender-based violence.
