Urgent: Grizzly Bear Attack Injures 11 Students and Teachers

UPDATE: A shocking grizzly bear attack occurred on Thursday afternoon, injuring 11 individuals, including students and teachers, in Bella Coola, British Columbia. The incident unfolded on a walking trail approximately 700 km northwest of Vancouver, prompting urgent action from local authorities.

Emergency Health Services confirmed that two people sustained critical injuries, while two others suffered serious injuries. The bear, described as “aggressive,” remains at large, leading the Nuxalk Nation to issue a warning for residents to stay indoors and avoid the highway. Police and conservation officers are actively searching for the animal.

In a social media post, the First Nation advised, “Officers are armed. Remain indoors and off the highway.” The community is in a state of shock as details emerge of the harrowing encounter. Parent Veronica Schooner recounted the terrifying moment her 10-year-old son Alvarez was so close to the bear that he could feel its fur. “He said that bear ran so close to him but it was going after somebody else,” Schooner shared.

As teachers attempted to fend off the bear, some children were accidentally hit with bear spray. Alvarez was seen limping and his shoes muddy from fleeing for safety. “He keeps crying for his friends,” Schooner added. “Right away he started praying for his friends.”

The independent Acwsalcta School has announced it will be closed on Friday, providing counseling services for students affected by the traumatic event. In a heartfelt Facebook post, the school expressed gratitude for their team and students, stating, “It’s hard to know what to say during this very difficult time.”

This incident raises urgent questions about safety in the area and the presence of wildlife near populated regions. Authorities are expected to provide updates as the situation develops, and community members are on high alert.

Residents are encouraged to stay informed as officials continue their search for the bear. The emotional toll on students and teachers alike is immense, with many grappling with the aftermath of this shocking attack.

Stay tuned for further updates as this story unfolds.
