Eddie Murphy to Receive AFI Life Achievement Award on April 18

Hollywood star Eddie Murphy is set to be honoured with a prestigious life achievement award from the American Film Institute (AFI). The award will be presented during a gala tribute at the Dolby Theatre in Los Angeles on April 18, 2024.

Kathleen Kennedy, chair of the AFI’s board of trustees, praised Murphy as “an American icon.” She noted his significant impact across film, television, and stand-up comedy, stating, “A trailblazing force in the art forms of film, television and stand-up comedy, his versatility knows no bounds.” Murphy, now 64, has been a central figure in entertainment for nearly five decades, first gaining fame as a teenage stand-up comedian and later as a member of the cast of Saturday Night Live.

Throughout his extensive career, Murphy has dominated the box office with numerous successful films including Beverly Hills Cop, Coming to America, The Nutty Professor, and the Shrek series. In 2007, he received an Academy Award nomination for Best Supporting Actor for his role in Dreamgirls, a performance that also earned him a Screen Actors Guild Award and a Golden Globe Award. Despite the accolades, Murphy expressed that he did not dwell on the Oscar loss, reflecting on the experience in a new documentary titled Being Eddie, currently streaming on Netflix.

In the documentary, Murphy candidly shared his thoughts on awards, saying, “It’s always wonderful to win stuff, but if I don’t win, I don’t give a (expletive). I’m still Eddie in the morning.” His perspective on success has evolved over the years; he explained that he now appreciates his accomplishments more than he did in his youth. “You take everything for granted when you’re young, how successful I was. Now I take nothing for granted and appreciate everything,” he told The Associated Press.

Murphy is the 51st recipient of the AFI life achievement award, which was first established in 1973, with the inaugural honour going to John Ford. Recent recipients include celebrated actors such as Nicole Kidman, Julie Andrews, and Denzel Washington. As Murphy prepares to accept this distinguished award, fans and colleagues alike look forward to celebrating his remarkable contributions to the entertainment industry.
