Watch Me Rock Triumphs in Urgent Railway Stakes Victory

Watch Me Rock wins the 2025 Railway Stakes

URGENT UPDATE: In a stunning display of skill and strategy, Watch Me Rock has clinched victory in the $1.5 million Swan Draught Railway Stakes at Ascot, marking a significant win for trainer duo Grant and Alana Williams and jockey William Pike on November 18, 2023. This victory not only elevates their status in WA racing but also secures their sixth Railway Stakes title.

The race unfolded dramatically, with Pike, the reigning champion jockey, expertly positioning the $3.40 favorite early in the contest. He maneuvered Watch Me Rock to travel alongside stablemate Western Empire, who was priced at $6. As the horses approached the final bend, Pike unleashed Watch Me Rock’s explosive speed, pulling ahead decisively to win by three-quarters of a length.

Grant Williams expressed his mixed emotions post-race, admitting he initially doubted Pike’s choice to ride Watch Me Rock over Western Empire. “I honestly thought he was on the wrong one,” Williams stated. “But it actually worked out better for the stable.” This win adds to the duo’s impressive record, as they previously achieved five Railway Stakes victories with prominent breeder Bob Peters.

Despite the pressure of this significant race, Grant Williams emphasized the importance of the win, stating, “We wanted to get that Group 1 on our own. We’ve won a Group 1 now. I’m going to go out on a limb and say it’s my best one.” His commitment to proving their capabilities without Peters has been a driving force behind their recent success.

Western Empire, last year’s Railway Stakes winner, finished a commendable second, reinforcing his status as a top competitor in WA racing. “For Watch Me Rock to beat Western Empire while being three years his junior, where does his ceiling lie?” Williams pondered, highlighting the potential of the young champion.

The race’s outcome was nearly jeopardized when Alana Williams suffered a finger injury leading up to the event. Grant reassured fans, saying, “We’re very lucky. Our riders that we’ve got at home and our staff, they’re all A-graders.” This teamwork was vital in overcoming their challenges.

Pike, who has guided all five of the Williams’ previous Railway winners, acknowledged the importance of this victory in validating his career. “I find it hard to say you’re the best if you’re not winning Group 1s,” he remarked. With this win, Pike reaffirmed his elite status in the sport.

Both horses benefited significantly from the favorable barrier draw, with Watch Me Rock and Western Empire starting from gates four and one, respectively. Pike noted, “I landed in a prime position. I didn’t expect to be that close.” He also admitted feeling the pressure as Western Empire approached from behind, showcasing the intense competition.

Looking ahead, Pike faces the challenging decision of choosing his mount for the upcoming Northerly Stakes on December 2, where he aims to add another Group 1 trophy to his collection. Watch Me Rock, currently priced at $7, and Western Empire at $5.50 are both expected to be key contenders.

As excitement builds around the future of these racing stars, Pike is eager for more opportunities, stating, “I’m hungry for a winner.” The racing community will be watching closely as this talented trio continues to shine in the spotlight.
