Northern Victoria Journalists Honoured at 2025 Awards Ceremony

The Rural Press Club of Victoria recently celebrated excellence in journalism at the 2025 Rural and Regional Journalism and Photography Awards, highlighting the critical role of local media in fostering democracy. Journalists and photographers from Northern Victoria received accolades for their contributions to community reporting, emphasizing the importance of accurate and independent journalism in regional areas.

Gaelle Broad, a member of the Northern Victoria upper house representing The Nationals, expressed her enthusiasm for the event, noting that quality journalism is essential for informed decision-making and government accountability. In her remarks, she stated, “Accurate, independent reporting helps people make informed decisions, holds governments to account, and ensures local voices are heard in statewide debates.”

The awards featured over 250 entries from journalists and photographers across Victoria and Tasmania, showcasing the talent and dedication of those in the field. The recognition of local media is particularly significant in regional areas, where trusted sources connect communities to the political issues that affect their daily lives.

Among the notable winners, Darren Howe from the Bendigo Advertiser was awarded Photographer of the Year, while Chris Earl of the Loddon Herald took home the title of Journalist of the Year. Earl also received the Community Champion award for his outstanding contributions to local journalism. The Bendigo Advertiser news team was recognized for their exceptional work in the Coverage of a Breaking News event.

Other distinguished journalists included Paula Mastrippolito from the Sunraysia Daily, Shannon Schubert of ABC Central Victoria, Dale Webster from The Regional, Andrew Mole of the Riverine Herald, Darren Chaitman of the Euroa Gazette, and Alistair Finlay also from the Sunraysia Daily.

The Rural Press Club of Victoria plays a vital role in promoting and supporting journalism in the region, recognizing the hard work and dedication of those who strive to keep their communities informed. Broad concluded her remarks by congratulating all the winners, emphasizing the importance of celebrating quality journalism in fostering a vibrant democratic society.
