Cairns Tour Guide’s Unique Wildlife Walks Surge in Popularity

UPDATE: Wildlife tours at the Cairns Botanic Gardens are experiencing a surge in popularity, driven by local guide Ms. Gower. Just announced, her unique nature and photography tours, showcasing the region’s rare critters, are drawing increasing interest from both locals and tourists.

The tours began as a side venture after Ms. Gower was made redundant during the pandemic. “I thought, well, maybe I could try and do this as a job… maybe other people might be interested in seeing bugs,” she explained. From her initial morning walks, a spooky Halloween night tour evolved into a cornerstone of her business, now offering evening walks that spotlight nocturnal wildlife.

Why it Matters: With the pandemic’s impact still lingering, Ms. Gower’s tours provide a fresh way for people to reconnect with nature while supporting local tourism. Her guided walks attract wildlife enthusiasts eager to learn about species like the Cairns Birdwing caterpillar, jumping spiders, and even snakes, including a recent python sighting near the Flecker Gardens.

Visitors can also purchase her newly released 2026 calendar, which features stunning photographs of local wildlife. “I have a list of things that I like that I’ve photographed throughout the year… then I create a shortlist,” she said, aiming to balance popular favorites with lesser-seen creatures. The calendar is available on her website, during tours, and at the Friends of the Botanic Gardens House.

The tours have not only gained traction but have also sparked requests for private sessions, indicating a growing demand for personalized experiences. “The word’s really starting to get out now… I don’t need to spend as much time doing promotion,” Ms. Gower shared, highlighting her success in attracting attention through word-of-mouth.

Looking ahead, Ms. Gower plans to expand her offerings by introducing additional macro photography courses. She seeks feedback from participants on preferred formats, considering options like full-day sessions, weekend courses, or multiple shorter classes. To ensure accessibility, equipment will be provided for attendees, making it easy for those without cameras to participate.

As Ms. Gower continues to foster a connection between the community and the unique ecosystems of Cairns, her passionate approach to wildlife education is resonating widely. This developing story underscores the resilience of local entrepreneurs and the ongoing need for nature-based experiences in today’s world.

Stay tuned for more updates on Ms. Gower’s tours and her initiatives to promote wildlife awareness at the Cairns Botanic Gardens.
